What’s Wrong with Tuesday? – The Most Underrated Day of the Week

Have you every realized that there is nothing special about Tuesday? It’s a weird day. Almost like it’s lost among all the other weekdays. I call Tuesday the “underdog of the week.” Why is it hidden; almost like it doesn’t exist, an afterthought?

Monday is the first day of the week, the back-to-work and too-bad-the-weekend-is-over-already day. Most people don’t like Mondays. I’m fine with them. It’s a new start, time to dive into writing and other projects with a clear mind. The weekend was fun and/or relaxing and ideally computer-less, but goals have to be reached and Monday is the perfect day to start a new to-do list. So many promises…

(As always click on or hover over photos to read the captions.)

Wednesday is hump day. It’s when I usually write and publish a blog post, although that’s been kind of a hodgepodge recently. But, it’s the middle of the week nevertheless. By evening, the weekend is on the horizon again. When I was a teacher in Belgium, Wednesdays meant half a day off; extra time for school work and errands. I like Wednesdays. They have potential. Don’t ask me why.

Thursday feels like the 31st day of a month. It is long and offers extra time. Like the month of May, my favorite month – except for that year it was mostly spent crossing an ocean. Some bloggers or Instagrammers post a Throwback Thursday story or photo. This is the day I video Skype with my parents in Belgium – if the internet is reliable enough. The evening feels close enough to the weekend to venture into having a drink.

And, Friday, of course, is awesome! It’s the last day of the work week; it arrives before you know it. It’s also the time I feel guilty at not finishing all the projects I set out to do on Monday. But it’s pretty much the weekend! It’s when I try to talk to my best friend in Grenada if our schedules align. An afternoon chat with her is the perfect transition into the weekend. On our previous sailboat, Irie, and when house and pet sitting, Friday nights were pizza nights. Unfortunately, we haven’t owned an oven in years, so that tradition has been paused.

I don’t have to tell you about Saturday and Sunday… It’s so nice to have a two-day weekend – I usually catch up on my overflowing inbox, blog reading and commenting, and postponed diary entries. Now that we have our truck camper, it’s also when we can do projects, maintenance, and prep work for our upcoming departure and adventure.

During the week, a deck work crew needs the driveway, we can’t block the garage, and parking arrangements at this condo building are tricky. On the flipside, weekends are not fun when you travel and intend to sightsee (or grocery shop); they are way too busy.

But, Tuesday? What about it? Nobody I know even posts their weekly blogs on Tuesday. There is no deadline, no completion, no excitement. It seems like a forgotten day. Except for Mitch and Morrie. I did enjoy reading Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom many years ago (check out those reviews!).

What else happens on a Tuesday? Oh, garbage day (as the recycle truck wakes me at 7am and I listen to trash collectors stirring the neighborhood for hours). Other than that, it’s a forgotten day – maybe a “free” day; a day to enjoy by making it special for ourselves. We should celebrate Tuesdays!

What does Tuesday mean to you? Any special habits?

  1. Living where we live now I often lose track of what day it is. I realize that’s quite a privilege! Certainly one Ben doesn’t have … But in general Tuesday’s are okay because it still feels like there’s a lot of the week left to go. An illusion of course as is the whole concept of time being linear ! 🙂

    Peta

    • That illusion happens to most of us, Peta. The week has to start somewhere. I also feel that Tuesday has potential, because it is still the beginning of the week and not much is expected of it! 🙂 I enjoy losing track of time and days, when we are on the road without too many (work) deadlines. I totally agree that the concept of days is very different to you than to Ben, as it is for me compared to Mark, who doesn’t distinguish the days at the moment. I often joke that I’ll always know which year it is and usually which month as well. Everything else requires a lot of thinking and figuring out (especially the dates)… When we are not living somewhere steady and work.

  2. I like your topic and agree that every day of the week has a different flavor. Tuesdays feel like a cushion to me before Wednesday, my blog day. On Tuesdays, I have to make sure my “featured” image is small enough to post via MailerLite. Also three loyal blog friends usually post on Tuesdays, so I visit them and comment.

By the way, the camper looks awesome with the shiny like-new truck, and the wildflower bouquet, so much nicer than flower shop “perfection.”

    • So, Tuesdays are quite meaningful and significant to you, Marian. Especially blog related. Do you also write your posts on that day? Unlike most bloggers (I learned this recently), I write my blogs by the sleeves of my pants – is that the expression? – and write, reread, select and add photos, resize and caption them, and post my blog all on the same day. Usually Wednesdays, so that day is pretty much shot for anything else.

When we walked Maya on a path along heaps of wildflowers one day, I had to pick some and create a bouquet for my mother-in-law. See, I don’t even think about keeping flowers myself. My mind works in funny ways. But I know how much she loves flowers, so that was the natural outcome.

Can’t wait to hit the road in that awesome truck camper… 🙂

Tuesday are often the days I make blog posts because I missed my Monday deadline. I don’t like to post on the weekend because I assume that people are doing much more fun stuff than reading my little stories. I always think that I have a whole weekend to get a post ready for Monday but often it ends up being too much. I don’t like to post on Wednesdays if I’m going to do two posts in a week. Since I don’t post on weekends I want to give people more than a day in between – so they don’t get tired of seeing my little stories.

Anyways since I haven’t made a blog post in a while – all the week days are the same. The weekends are another story.

This is when we try not to travel – although we have done it pretty successfully a few times in our travels lately. It is when we try to avoid crowds – but somehow it always seems to be when we go to the grocery store.

    Happy Tuesday!

    • I had no idea you had a Monday blogging deadline, Duwan. That must be self-imposed? Which means, you can change, adjust, and be flexible, without feeling guilty. 🙂 I guess it means I’m not paying much attention to which days people post blogs.

I find that quite a few people save blog reading for the weekends. Especially during the pandemic, not much fun is to be had. I agree with not bombarding readers with blog posts too close together. There was a year, in the far past, when I posted three (relatively short) blog posts a week – on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. I think that’s how I wrote and planned them. And, there was that first year in my Roaming About blogging career where I joined the A-Z Challenge in April, where you produce and post a blog six out of seven days for the entire month. Crazy! I’ll never do that again…

While I think it makes sense to have a schedule and/or routine in most situations, I’d rather not have any and just live, without days or months meaning much. Of course, then you don’t have anything to look forward to…

  4. Hi Liesbet, You’ve reminded me of the song “Tuesday’s Gone with the Wind”. I guess I’m aging myself here.

My husband and I used to have a hot dog cart and before we started, other food truck vendors warned us of slow Tuesday’s. The perfect day to offer discounts to customers.

I loved all of the pictures. Maya is such a good model. The picture of you and Maya walking with the sunflowers around you is my favorite. And the “spoiled” picture is sweet. 🙂

    • Ha Lea! I don’t think I have ever heard that song. Of course, if I listen to the tunes I might recognize it. I’m not good at remembering song names or artists. If the tune sticks and my head bobs, I know I like – and will remember – that song.

I had no idea you ran a hot dog cart – what a fun fact about you and your husband. I also wonder whether that’s why Taco Tuesday took off, because those days are slow selling days…

Maya is a cutie. A stubborn, food-oriented cutie, but a cutie nevertheless. We receive compliments about her looks and special coat every single day when we walk her through town. <3

      • Maya does have a gorgeous coat. What’s a girl to do? 🙂 She can’t help that she was born beautiful.

We had fun with the hot dog cart. It was a lot of work but we enjoyed working together and we enjoyed our customers. We even had one customer who came to the cart and got two hot dogs for his dogs, not one for himself. No bun, no toppings just two hot dogs. He came back the next day we were there and got one for himself.

        • Haha! Yes, Maya was born beautiful and, after four tough years, has found her happy-ever-after life and family. Funny about the customer buying hot dogs for his not-so-hot dogs. 🙂

  5. Liesbet, how right you are! Nothing much happens on Tuesday, but only you would take the time to sort that out. Highly entertaining read.

    • I’m glad you enjoyed the Tuesday post. Time to enjoy the Tuesdays as well. We will have to make something happen ourselves on Tuesdays, so this day will stand on its own. 🙂

  6. What a grand idea Liesbet, to make Tuesday a special day. At the moment, the days seem to be melting into one! Love the sunflower walk. A friend and her husband has just brought a similar camper to yours and they love it. We’re in full lockdown now so they will have to wait. Thanks for the smile, Liesbet.

    • Especially these times, I’m glad I could put a smile on your face, Suz. There are so many topics we take for granted or never think about, like something as routinely and bland as a Tuesday. Usually, when I have thoughts like these, I move on. Last week, I felt the need to share one of them. My Tuesday revelations became the winner.

How cool you know other people with a similar camping set-up. I don’t remember if truck campers were popular in New Zealand. All I remember seeing at the wild camping sites were smaller RVs, like vans and bus-type thingies. Sorry to hear about the full lockdown again. 🙁 Hopefully, all your plans are still lined up and a go. Lots of reading moments, and hopefully by summertime, you’ll be able to be more free…

  7. Hi, Liesbet –

I greatly enjoyed this fun post. I wholeheartedly agree that we should celebrate Tuesdays. Always going for the underdog, here are a few things that I can think of that happen on Tuesdays.

    • #Giving Tuesday
    * Fat Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday)
    • Taco Tuesday
    • Election days are usually on Tuesdays (at least in NA)
    • Video games are often released on Tuesdays

And then there’s all of those songs:

    • Ruby Tuesday (The Rolling Stones)
    • Tuesday Morning (Melissa Etheridge)
    • Tuesday Afternoon (The Moody Blues)
    • Groovy Tuesday (The Smithereens)
    • Sun Comes Up It’s Tuesday Morning (Cowboy Junkies)
    •Tuesday’s Heartbreak (Stevie Wonder)
    • Tuesday’s Gone (Hank Williams, Jr.)
    • Tuesday I’ll be Gone (Blake Shelton)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68eue5cpbsE

So let’s all cheer for Tuesday!

    • Donna, it was such a joy to read your comment! I’m happy to learn (although I could have expected) that you are a fan of underdogs. We have to, because of the countries we are from, right? Canada, the underdog of the US and Belgium, the underdog of the Netherlands – just like New Zealand compared to Australia.

You sure came up with a lot of credit for Tuesday. It thanks you! And, you reminded me of Taco Tuesday. Of course. Not really a thing in Massachusetts, unfortunately. I wonder if the people who created #Giving Tuesday also thought that day needed “something.” 🙂

And those are a lot of Tuesday songs. You either have a good memory or Google is a fan of Tuesdays too!! Thanks for adding so much to this discussion. I greatly appreciate it.

  8. It’s my book club meeting. That’s something. And I usually walk the dog. Two things!

    • A book club meeting! That’s something fun to look forward to on a Tuesday. We don’t have a yard at all, so Maya gets a good long walk every day. Therefore, she wouldn’t know which day Tuesday is… Or, maybe for her, every day is Tuesday. 🙂

  9. You are so right about poor old Tuesday, Liesbet. Now I need to think of something fun to do every Tuesday so it doesn’t develop poor self-esteem. Maybe… dessert night? Thanks for the fun post, I better get cooking!

    • I’m sure Tuesday will forgive you, Diana. Especially since you are making a concerted effort to turn it into a fun activity day. So interesting that, at the exact time I read your comment, I was eating a freshly-made brownie. So, Dessert Tuesday it is!! No, wait: Tasty Tuesday!

Just wait until you retire, Liesbet. Everyday feels like Friday! Once in a while I actually have to think about what day it is. Who the hell cares—I’m retired! ???? Retirement doesn’t mean sitting around doing nothing all day. It simply means all of the stress is gone.

    • Ooooh, I love Fridays. I can’t wait to retire, Pete. There is only one slight issue: because of our chosen lifestyle, retiring is not really in the cards. Honestly, which job will we be retiring from? And, euh, we barely make enough money to cover our yearly expenses. But, as always, we will find a way to make every day feel like Friday at some point or another. Or we’ll just decide to never have stress anymore. 🙂

  11. Taco Tuesday!!! Love the truck and camper. They look great together.

    • Yes! Taco Tuesday! I did forget about that. I just wish there was a place nearby us that had these kinds of Tuesdays. And, in Mexico every day is Taco Tuesday.

I agree with you Ingrid, that camper and truck look like a match made in heaven, haha. We did have to create quite a few modifications to make the camper fit in the bed alright, though. But, nobody would know. 🙂

  12. I love Tuesdays! Other days of the week are designated for administrative tasks, marketing, financial stuff, and blogging; but Tuesdays I ignore all that and just write. Hooray for the ‘underdog’ day! 🙂

    • I love underdogs, even when they are days. Maybe we should call them underdays. So, Tuesdays are your favorite of the week, Diane? It sounds divine to dedicate an entire day a week to “just writing.” I bet you get a lot done on Tuesdays and they give you a major feel of accomplishment. Maybe Thursdays can become Tuesdays as well? 🙂

  13. I loved Tuesdays with Morrie too! Good on you for giving Tuesday its proper significance! Loved the updater 🙂

    • Hi Debbie! Thanks for tuning in. Did you ever see the reviews on Amazon for Tuesdays with Morrie? I just did when writing this post. Wow, an author’s dream!!! 🙂

  14. Fun post and it has made me stop and think about all the different days of the week and what my routine is like. Since retiring I want time to slow down, I want to savour every day…I don’t always succeed.
I love your new truck, it is going to take you on an amazing adventure.

    • Hi Gilda! Slowing down is good. I keep telling myself I should (need!) to do that as well.

Mark, Maya, and I can’t wait for this next adventure to start, although we have no clue when we will actually be able to get to South America. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to following along (first in spirit, then via your blog) with your next and soon-to-be-executed adventure. Happy hiking!

  15. Seeing your truck camper again reinforces my view that it does look really smart. I like the black and white combo despite your reservations.

    • I’m starting to think you are right about this smart-looking combo of ours, Anabel. Doesn’t look too shabby as a new home, does it? 🙂 Let’s hope it offers us the comfort, convenience, and robustness we are looking for. Only time will tell – and us finally moving in!

  16. Liesbet, Your truck camper looks classy. New adventures await and that’s exciting! I love Tuesdays. It’s my do yoga-go cycling-play disc golf day and Taco Tuesday dinner is easy peasy. Thanks for the fun post.

    • Natalie, I’m glad you like our new set-up. It looks and is very different than Zesty. We will have to get used to all the changes – like where everything is stored, a different bathroom, bed, dinette, entrance – but are excited about this fresh start. Your Tuesdays sound like a lot of fun, nothing at all like an underdog day. 🙂

  17. Tuesday is the best day of the week to go into town and do any shopping because it’s generally very quiet, so no crowed places. You can also easily book a table at a restaurant and (when I used to go) the best day to see a movie at the cinema (no queues and nobody sitting next to you). I also like Tuesdays because it means pasta or chilli for dinner.
Lovely photos, Liesbet. Looks like the new vehicle is almost ready for your next adventure.

    • Now that’s a good point, Hugh, about Tuesdays. You actually convinced me to do take-out or maybe sit outside at a restaurant on a Tuesday, next time. If the restaurant I have in mind is open on Tuesdays. I do want to treat Mark to a nice meal before we leave this busy town. Don’t tell him yet, but I’m thinking it will happen on a Tuesday. 🙂 And, I will try to postpone my grocery shopping to the coming Tuesday instead of Monday. Maybe I notice a difference.

Pasta or chili sounds good to me. Are you the cook or does your partner whip up these meals?

Almost ready to go – waiting on a few more parts to replace/add a few more important items. Our biggest challenge right now is figuring out a way to take our e-bikes with us, as we can’t use the same bike rack we had on Zesty with this set-up. And, we are trying to sell a few items as well, in order to make some of the money back that we are spending…

      • If I told you to never allow me to cook for you, it should tell you who does the cooking in our house, Liesbet. I do occasionally make the odd banana loaf, but it’s rare. I’m in charge of all things technical, so it keeps me busy especially with so many questions are being thrown at me as to why an online order didn’t go through or too much of something arrived when it wasn’t ordered, etc.

Yesterday, when out on our afternoon walk, we walked past a ‘Zesty’ type vehicle that was advertised for £16,000. I’m not sure what the inside condition was like, but I read that secondhand vehicles are selling for more than brand new vehicles in the UK. I thought of Mark and you as we walked past the vehicle and wondered just how suitable a vehicle it may have been had it been on your side of the pond.

I hope you find a way of taking the e-bikes with you. I’m thinking of getting an e-bike but am waiting for the weather to change in the hope that they’ll be less expensive to buy then.

        • So nice that you thought about us when seeing that interesting van for sale, Hugh. My guess is the vehicle was a “shell,” meaning it still had to be built out inside to be able to camp and live in. But maybe I’m wrong. It could have been old for that price. Thing is, though, that campers, in general are more affordable in Europe than in the US, where small ones are rare. Whenever we do our Europe/Asia/Africa adventure, we will search for the right set-up in Europe. The manufacturers there have so much choice, ingenious builds, and fantastic reputations. But that’s for a future endeavor. 🙂

Once you go e-bike, you’ll never go back, especially when you hope to bike in hilly areas. I wish I used my bike more, but ever since we’ve adopted Maya, my use of it has dwindled. Good to wait until the fall before you buy one. Make sure you try them out at a store first as well.

And, I’ll keep in mind to never ask you to cook me anything! Mark is the cook in our household…

  18. I like Tuesdays exactly because it is a nondescript kind of day. Tuesday is the young adolescent of the week … still full of youthful optimism. It’s an anything-is-possible day. Yes, Tuesdays are good days ????
    Great post, Liesbet.

  19. I loved your post and all the photos. Tuesdays are about the same for me since I work. Nothing special about them here. Lol.

    • Poor old Tuesdays. Maybe you can have a special dinner on Tuesdays? Or, maybe the commute is easier (if you don’t work from home)? Something special can happen on a Tuesday, Tasty Tuesday… 🙂

  20. I sometimes have the feeling that Tuesday is the worst day of the weekend. Monday, back to work ugghh. Tuesday….there is no escape we are back to work….and the weekend is so far away. I need to treat Tuesday more positively 🙂

    • Hi Alex! Thanks for swinging by and leaving a comment. That’s another interesting way to look at Tuesdays… Yes, the weekend is still very far away and – darn – that workweek did get started again. But, imagine you have a fun Tuesday – the day would go much quicker and bring you one step closer to that coveted weekend again.

  21. I think Tuesday is the worst day of the week, Monday is like uggh back to work. Then Tuesday you have to accept that week has started and you didn’t manage what you needed to do on Monday!

Apologies if my comment appears twice, I think I got caught in some kind of spam filter with my first comment, using the word uggh to many times.

I need to look on Tuesdays more positively!

    • Hi Alex! Thanks for trying twice and being determined. Every time a new reader leaves a comment on my blog, it goes to moderation. Once I approve your first ever comment, you can leave future comments without the approval and delay. So, from now on, your comments should show up immediately and you will be able to see them appear. Feel free to use the word “uggh” as much as you want. 🙂

  22. Hi Liesbet,
I’m at that stage of life where the work day is just that, another work day.so I hang on until the weekend when I can, if I choose, sleep in an hour or so then get up to do my daily reading and then work on whatever I please. Producing new stories is always high on the list but so is checking in with other bloggers, doing blog site maintenance and such.
Hope this finds you well and loving life.
    Blessings.

    • Hi Gary! I’m sorry to read that work is just that: work that has to be done and over with and nothing more. I hope you do find some joy in other pursuits, like writing all your stories on the blog. 🙂 I often feel that blogging and taking care of site maintenance and keeping everything up to date and running is work as well. We all have to focus on what’s important and rewarding for us – we’ll get there! 🙂

  23. Nothing special in my world on Tuesdays, but I think of it as a mellow day, having been eased into the week by Monday. Your truck’s looking great!

    • Tuesdays are usually pretty quiet in my (current) world too, Deb. Except for yesterday, when I – finally – received a decent-sized translation assignment again. It had been a year (due to Covid). Tuesday came and went pretty fast and entirely behind a computer screen…

  24. Love how you’ve compartmentalized the days Liesbet. I’d like to add that for writers, our work never ends from Monday thru Sunday lol. 🙂 xx

    • I totally agree, Debby! Us writers never stop working. Unless we decide to shut – or leave – that computer off for a certain day. I try to do this on weekends, but fail miserable each time. So, these weekends, I try to restrict my laptop time to two hours a day. That I can manage. 🙂

  25. I’ve always loved Tuesdays, for some reason. Mondays are often slow-starters for me, after a weekend off (on those rare occasions I’ve had a weekend off), and Tuesday is when I get into a groove. It was also the only day of the working week when I usually saw Simon, so that was something to look forward to.

Thursdays are the day that hangs over my head, because it’s when the weekend looms and I realize how little I’ve accomplished! 🙂

    • I can totally see how you loved Tuesdays – they are the underdog. Just like you are/used to be the underdog. 🙂 I totally feel you about Thursdays. All of a sudden it’s almost weekend and this is the day I realize, “where the heck did another week go?”

Happy almost Tuesday again to you! 🙂

  26. Radiant heating…really?!?
