Readers of this blog probably know that Mark and I have been looking for a very specific van as our new home on wheels. With this vehicle, we hope to explore Europe and beyond – Asia, Africa, and the Middle East when safe again.

A 4×4 Vario in Germany
This next stage of our lives requires a robust, reliable, fixable, durable, and yet comfortable camper. That’s why we are looking for a 4×4 Mercedes Vario, as it ticks all those boxes. The living area and the cab are connected, the engine is almost bulletproof, and these vehicles are known to be resilient. The 4WD part is non-negotiable for us (there are plenty of 2WD versions available) as we plan to venture off the beaten path and know the importance of high clearance and four-wheel drive from our previous overlanding experiences.
But… this particular vehicle is extremely popular and difficult to come by and that’s why I am asking for help. If you know of anyone who might be thinking about selling their Vario or you have one for sale yourself, please get in touch.
Mark and I are interested in just the empty van (to build out ourselves/with a company) or in one that’s already converted into a camper.
You might remember that we have been looking for this type of Vario for a long time. I’d say for almost an entire year. First the research, then pursuing a few options in Chile (which all failed), and then in Europe and elsewhere in the world.
We have followed leads in Peru, Chile, Bahrein, Dubai, Germany (we just returned from a 12-hour drive to check one out that has too many issues and rust), and the Netherlands. It has taken a lot of time, effort, focus, and energy and we are running out of steam… Soon, we will need a different plan and approach.
Thank you for sharing our quest and spreading the word, especially if you are a fellow overlander or someone who knows these kinds of vehicles or owners.

This is how our future camper would look like. This is NOT a 4WD version, though.
Happy May!

I ran it through my current favorite AI–Grok–and got this result:
“Yes, there are several 4WD (Allrad/4×4) Mercedes Vario listings, mostly in Europe (Germany, Netherlands, etc.), with very few in South America. The Vario is a discontinued medium-duty van/truck (often used for campers, expedition builds, or commercial work), so 4×4 versions are rarer and typically ex-military, fire service, or specialist conversions. Prices range from around €20k–€50k+ for workable examples, higher for fully equipped expedition campers.
autoscout24.com
Key European Listings (as of recent data)Mercedes-Benz Vario 815 DA-KA 4×4 Allrad (Arme Camper, 6-seater): €53,950, 2002, ~104k km, diesel, 150 hp. Located in Germany (Lehrte). Camper-style setup.
autoscout24.com
Various 4×4 tippers/dump trucks and flatbeds (e.g., 816 Vario Meiller Kipper 4×4): €24k–€26k range. Examples in Germany and elsewhere; check for Allrad/differential locks.
truckscout24.com
Expedition/Overland builds on Expeditionmeister.com: Several Vario 4×4 campers (e.g., 814/815/816/818 models) in Germany, France, Switzerland, Czechia, priced €80k–€150k+. Features include full off-grid setups, solar, low mileage examples. Many are ex-military or professionally converted.

Other sites like TruckScout24, AutoScout24, Kleinanzeigen.de, and Autoline have 4×4 Varios (pickups, box trucks, etc.) in the €10k–€50k range, often in Germany/Belgium/Netherlands. Filter for “Allrad” or “4×4″.
autoscout24.com
Recommended sites to check:AutoScout24.com and TruckScout24.com (pan-European, good filters for 4×4).
Expeditionmeister.com (specializes in overland/expedition Varios).
Local classifieds like Kleinanzeigen.de (Germany) or equivalents in other countries.
South AmericaListings are scarce. One 2015 Mercedes Vario 4×4 noted in Copiapó, Chile (~$31k USD equivalent).
machinio.com
Chile has some Vario buses/vans on local sites like ChileAutos.cl.
chileautos.cl
No prominent current 4×4 expedition listings in Brazil/Argentina from searches—check local sites (e.g., Mercado Libre) or overland forums.”
Not sure if that’s helpful!

Thanks, Jacqui. There’s definitely some truth to this AI statement. Some of those websites are familiar to us, but I’ll check out the ones I don’t recognize. The main website we are using is not on the AI list, which is surprising. And of course, there are other important details, like how many miles the Varios for sale have, their condition, and the asking price.
I wish we could put all our requirements into an AI program and it would spit out the perfect results, haha. And, yes, we have tried that (unsuccessfully). 🙂

I’ve never seen one before. The style reminds me of some of the postal vehicles in our area.
May 2, 2026 at 3:42 pm
Hi Pete,
Yes, the boxy and stubby design of the Vario looks a bit like the postal vehicles in the US. I hadn’t thought about that. The reason you have never seen one before is easy: other than a rare few that have been imported into the US, they don’t exist in North America.

Good luck with the search, Liesbet.
May 2, 2026 at 3:42 pm
Thanks, Natalie. At least we should be on the right continent now – and finally closer to Germany too, where most of them exist.

Liesbet,
I had never heard of a 4×4 Mercedes Vario before, (or just can’t remember hearing about it) but after reading why you want one, it makes total sense — durable, fixable, high clearance, connected cab and living space, and strong enough for the kind of travel you’re planning. No wonder the 4WD part is non-negotiable.
I hope the right person sees this and passes along a real lead. It sure sounds like the right van is out there somewhere.
Good luck with the search, and thanks for sharing. Jim

Hi Jim,
I full-heartedly join you in hoping that someone with a good lead reads my post and passes on the word. But there really is only a tiny chance of that. We have scoured the web and spread the word about our quest for a while now without any good leads.
These vehicles are old (and rusty) and finding a decent one is very difficult. Plus, us being in Southern Europe for the last three months hasn’t helped as we just missed out on another one. We had hoped to see it this weekend, but someone else scooped it up on Thursday. It’s been a rough ride and an emotional rollercoaster. And we are starting to run out of time.

What a long and frustrating search. Here’s hoping you find your “unicorn” soon!
May 2, 2026 at 3:47 pm
Thanks, Diane. I was just telling Mark that what we are looking for is a needle in a haystack.
May 2, 2026 at 5:47 am
Good luck with the search, Liesbet. I had a look if there were any for sale in the UK, but the results I got back were for Mercedes vans and lots of NHS ambulances. All had very high mileage. Not what you are looking for, although I did get a warning saying that Mercedes 4X4 Vario were in short supply and well sought after. I hope you find one somewhere on the continent.
May 2, 2026 at 3:50 pm
Hi Hugh,
You just confirmed everything we have discovered so far. 🙂 There are still some 4×4 Varios available in Europe, but they are either very expensive, very rusty, or have incredibly high miles. Or a combination of these. There might be a few available in the UK, but having a right-hand drive vehicle is not a good idea for us to travel worldwide.
May 3, 2026 at 6:26 am
I never thought about the right-hand drive aspect. Good job, you are on the case, Liesbet.
May 10, 2026 at 9:14 am
Haha, Hugh. You have no idea how much research and time has gone into this current camper search of ours. I’m sure anyone else would have given up by now and found an alternative vehicle. Even our family is now asking why we are going through so much effort to find this particular Vario 4×4 vehicle. 🙂
May 2, 2026 at 7:34 am
Here’s hoping you find one soon, so you don’t have to go to Plan B. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
May 2, 2026 at 3:53 pm
Thanks, Steven. The thing is, there is no plan B yet. If we don’t find a Vario within the next two to three months (but ideally earlier as Mark can only stay in Belgium for 90 days out of every 180), we will have to come up with another camper or travel method. Fingers crossed indeed!
May 3, 2026 at 5:29 pm
Good luck with your quest, Liesbet. It must be very frustrating to travel a long distance only to be disappointed.
May 10, 2026 at 9:17 am
Hi Janis,
We are aware of the devotion, time, effort, and money that goes into searching a vehicle internationally. Travel is part of that. And, a lot of “waste of money, time, and effort” as well. And the frustration, of course. But we’ve been there and know the deal. Except that, this time, everything seems more intense and extreme because we are in Europe (and not the US), sellers act differently here, there are language barriers, and the euro makes life, travel, and a potential purchase that much more expensive.
May 4, 2026 at 11:58 am
Can you have 4WD added to a regular one? Do you have an upfitter picked out already?
I know you guys do lots of research. And you have spent a considerable amount of time searching for the exact thing you want in the past. Perhaps the perfect one will appear just like the other rigs you have hunted for.
But who knows, there might be a better, easier-to-find option out there.
May 10, 2026 at 9:25 am
Hi Duwan,
There is one Vario van available that has been “upgraded” from 2WD to 4WD, but this is not ideal. And the resell value isn’t great either.
We have talked to and visited a van builder in Germany that we are considering using. But, as long as we don’t have a vehicle, everything else seems mute at the moment. In fact, we have every piece of the (complicated) puzzle figured out by now – which was not easy or straightforward at all – but the most important piece (a vehicle) is still missing.
The difference with other rigs that we researched and eventually purchased in the past is multiple fold. Everything is made harder because we are in Europe now (and not residents), sellers are reluctant to talk to potential buyers and don’t trust them or think they’re wasting their time (this has been a bit frustrating), there are language barriers, and there is the weak dollar…
We have considered other, “back-up” campers or vans, namely an Iveco, but while researching this second choice, we found deeper issues with it. And the 4×4 Sprinters are crazy expensive and cine with all the emission/diesel/electronics complications. So, we went back to our needle in the haystack Vario search.

You will find your home. You’ve already put out there into the universe. 🧡
May 10, 2026 at 9:26 am
I hope you’re right, Debby, but time is starting to press now that we are in Belgium. We only need one good one to pop up and we will check it out as soon as possible. Fingers crossed! At least we are now in a position to look at things.
